They called us born frees because we came into the world after the blacks took back their lands and what belonged to them from the white oppressors. Most lost their lives in fighting for the right to own the land and it’s resources and to free the majority from oppression and gain our independence.From Mbuya Nehanda, Sekuru Kaguvi, Herbert Chitepo, Josiah Tongogara and thousands more they gave their lives to the nation and they lost them in the process because they wanted to free the black people from bondage and the oppression by the white settler. Dictionary meaning of independence “it’s the state or quality of being independent; freedom from dependence; exemption from reliance on, or control by others; self-subsistence or maintenance; direction of one’s own affairs without interference”.18 April Zimbabwe celebrated her independence we have finally freed ourselves from bondage and oppression we were now a free people, we celebrated not knowing we were only changing the colour of the skin of our oppressors. Since 1980 Zimbabweans have never known freedom thousands lost their lives in the Matebeleland genocide. Gukurahundi which still scars the nation at this very moment where thousands of mainly ndebele people lost their lives in the Matebeleland and Midlands province at the hands of the state. In 2000 in trying to reclaim the land the war vets forcibly removed the whites from the land.Destroying property in the process with hundreds losing their lives. Torture, abductions, arrests, capture of the courts and squashing of protests has characterized the political field in the country. Many opposition supporters and activists lost their lives at the hands of the ruling party and the security agents. Anyone who has spoken against the government or those in authority has faced harsh punishment from the state. This in process has chased away investments in the country but the government has been blaming the targeted sanctions that the west imposed on those who are responsible for these human rights transgressions.The majority of the citizens are living below the poverty line ,with some going to bed on an empty stomach, children dropping out from school and many graduates make a living selling airtime and phones. Are the sanctions imposed on the selected few to blame? Definitely not but the 40 years of poor governance by the ruling party is to blame. Many youths they had their dreams snatched away from them, and those who have managed to leave the country they have done so in hope in salvaging their dreams and look for greener pastures in a foreign land.Are we born free? When we are still being oppressed by our own government or we are still under colonization but not from the white person this time, we have been colonised for 40 years by the black person. Until we are free from this oppression we will never be born frees.
